"Feastday, Lunch" 11"x14" Acrylic on Cotton Canvas. 2023

Artist Statement

"Feastday, Lunch" is a 14"x11" painting created using acrylic paint on a white cotton canvas. "Feastday, Lunch" is centered around a dancer eating a red snow cone. This piece is supposed to be familiar to those who have participated in traditional dancing. In midday, when the sun is at its peak, you are buried under the weight of your family's regalia, saved by the generosity of a lunchtime snow cone. I chose to keep the dancer's identity vague as most Pueblo dancers know the familiarity of a Feast Day snow cone.

Elysia Escobedo born July 6, 2003, is from Santa Clara Pueblo with Hopi and Cochiti lineage. Due to the involuted workings of the blood quantum system, Elysia is currently unclaimed by any of these pueblos. Despite her pending membership, she claims her Santa Clara bloodline and self-affiliates with the tribe.

Elysia Escobedo has been creating ever since she could hold a crayon. She has dabbled in many mediums such as illustrating, painting, digital art, fiber arts, and storytelling. Escobedo uses her artwork to express her internal voice. Elysia felt that her weakest attribute was speaking, especially under pressure. Because of this, her voice goes unrecognized. Her artwork advocates for her values and identity.
